Getting Medical Treatment


In UK National Health Service are responsible for providing health services. It provides heath services through various forms such as Primary Care Trust, NHS Direct, Hospitals, Emergency services, NHS walk-in centres etc.

NHS medical care is free and available throughout the UK to those who are resident in the UK for a period of six months or more.

Primary Care Trust


Primary Care Trust plays a central role in the local community, GPs, pharmacists, dentists and midwives. The main service providers of Primary Care Trust are General Practitioners, dentists, opticians, pharmacists.

General practitioners


GPs work with nurses and other staff to treat patients for a range of health problems. They also give health education and advice, run clinics, give vaccinations and carry out simple surgical operations. Every UK citizen has a right to register with a local doctor's surgery and visits to surgeries are free.

Medical emergency


Anyone who is involved in a medical emergency should dial 999, and ask for an ambulance, which will take you to the nearest accident and emergency department. This service is free of charge but should only be used for emergencies when urgent treatment is needed immediately.

NHS Direct


NHS Direct is 24 hour telephone advice service for free. If you are unsure as to whether you need to see a doctor about a particular health problem, or if you would like to have advice on health problems you can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
